Crypt's Alliance leveling guide, Part 3!

Westfall

Started: Level 11
Completed: Level 14
Aah Westfall… As dry and barren as it is, for some reason it’s one of my favorite Alliance zones. By now I start to feel as if my character is starting to get somewhere, finally out of the newbie area of Elwynn Forest, a change of scenery in front of me.

You enter Westfall from the west most end of Elwynn Forest, just past the Westbrook Garrison and the area where Hogger and his gnolls inhabit. As you exit Elwynn Forest you will pass over a small bridge and have your surroundings turn from lush greens, to dry yellow and brown.
Westfall was all but destroyed by the rebel Defias Brotherhood and its demi-human minions, who could easily take control of the poorly defended farmlands. The Brotherhood, composed mainly of thieves and bandits, made Westfall their new refuge. Employing everything from local superstitions to sabotaging mechanical Harvest Golems, the Brotherhood stopped at nothing to scare away trespassers and protect their stolen treasures.

Only the People's Millitia, a volunteer military organization, rose to stand in their way, recruiting young heroes of the Alliance to strike back and regain what was stolen. This battle is still ongoing, and in the end, the only hope the people of Westfall has is to strike directly against the leaders of the Defias, in hiding somewhere deep below ground.
As you enter the zone you will immediately see Verna and Farmer Fulbrow, and if you were lucky enough to have Furlbrow's Deed drop while killing in Elwynn Forest, you can hand this into Farmer Fulbrow now.

[14] Poor Old Blanchy
Obtained from : Verna Furlbrow, The Jansen Stead, Westfall
Objective : Gather 8 Handfuls of Oats
Rewards :
9 Armor Cloak, 4 Slot bag and 1250 XP

[10] Westfall Stew
Obtained from : Verna Furlbrow, The Jansen Stead, Westfall
Objective : Deliver Verna’s recipe to Salma Saldean.
Rewards : 420 XP
Be sure to also collect The Forgotten Heirloom while you are here, although you won’t be attempting to complete it straight away. To start with, we are going to continue on our way to Sentinel Hill, the main focal point of the zone.

From The Furlbrows, continue along the path until you see it fork, from here you want to head almost straight south through the grass to the house you can see off in the distance. Inside you will find Salma Saldean who Verna wanted you to find. You can also collect a couple of other quests while you here…

Note : Be sure to keep your eyes open, there will usually a sack of oats or two around the outskirts of this. You will find these scattered through out the zone.

[12] Gortusk Liver Pie
Obtained from : Salma Saldean, Saldean’s Farm, Westfall
Objective : Collect 8 Goretusk Livers
Rewards : 3 Goretusk Pies, the recipe and 900 XP

[13] Westfall Stew
Obtained from : Salma Saldean, Saldean’s Farm, Westfall
Objective : Gather the ingredients for Westfall Stew
Rewards : A variety of items as well as 900 XP

Both of these quests can be done while running around the zone and don’t really need to be done in a particular area or in any order.
  • 3 x Stringy Vulture Meat – From Fleshripper’s found all around the zone.
  • 3 x Goretusk Snouts – Drops from Goretusks, again all over the zone.
  • 3 x Murloc Eyes – Murlocs are found along the shore line
  • 3 x Okra – Drops from the Mechanical Harvesters.
Once you have collected your quests, face south and make your way towards the tower you should be able to see in the distance. Kill or dodge any mobs in your way. Sentinel Hill provides you with a flight path, merchants to sell up to and repair at (repair at the ones on the side of the road), an Inn to rest at and lots more quests!

[10] A Swift Message
Obtained from : Quartermaster Lewis, Sentinel Hill
Objective : Deliver Lewis' Note to the gryphon master
Rewards : 210 XP

If you are playing a Human character, you will be able to pick up this quest from the merchant located inside Sentinel Tower. The quest line is fairly easy to follow, take Lewi’s note to the gryphon master at Sentinel Hill and then purchase a flight to Stormwind. Note that you must purchase the flight and not hearthstone back, this is part of the quest line…

Once you land in Stormwind, make your way to the Old Town section of the city. As you enter from the Trade District, turn right and you should almost instantly see the yellow marker appear on your mini map outlining the whereabouts of Osric Strang. Once you have handed in that step, head back to the Stormwind Gryphon master, hand in and purchase a flight back to Westfall… again you must take the flight.

Once back in Westfall, hand the final part back to Quartermaster Lewis. The total quest line yielded me 1890 XP.

[12] The People’s Militia
Obtained from : Gryan Stoutmantle, Sentinel Hill, Westfall
Objective : Slay 15 Defias Trappers and 15 Smugglers
Rewards : 900 XP

[15] Red Leather Bandanas
Obtained from : Scout Galiaan, Sentinel Hill, Westfall
Objective : Retrieve 15 Red Leather Bandanas
Rewards : Choice of Cloak or Legs and 1050 XP

I decided to begin my real adventures with some Defias killing. If you head North out of Sentinel Hill, you’ll come across a small patch of Defias Trappers and Smugglers, so feel free to stop and kill your way through that.

That one camp won’t be enough to finish the quest, but if you continue north running between The Molsen and Saldean Farms, you will come across Jangolode Mine which has more than enough. You will most likely find more Smugglers inside, or you can hang around outside for safety and wait for respawn. All of them have a chance to drop the Red Leather Bandana’s, however if you don’t get all 15 by the time you have your kill count, don’t worry, there will be many more Defias to kill!

[12] The Forgotten Heirloom
Obtained from : Farmer Furlbrow, The Jansen Stead, Westfall
Objective : Retrieve Furlbrow’s Pocket Watch
Rewards : 10 Freshly Baked Bread, 10 Ice Cold Milk and 900 XP

Once you are done slaughtering Jangolode Mine, make your way north-east to Furlbrow’s Pumpkin Farm. Inside the hut there (not the barn) you will find a closet. Inside that you will find Farmer Furlbrow’s Pocket Watch. You will have one Defias guarding just outside the entrance, and usually another one inside. Along with the one inside however, you will also have Benny Blaanco who is level 15 and neither can be pulled separately.

You can try sneaking up outside the hut and trying to loot the closet through the wall, but there is still a very good chance you will agro both. Although level 15, he is not that hard to take down…

[14] Patrolling Westfall
Obtained from : Captain Danuvin, Sentinel Hill, Westfall
Objective : Collect 8 Gnoll Paws
Rewards : 11 Armor Cloth Wristbands and 975 XP

Once you have collected your pocket watch, continue north to the cliffs that overlook the water. All along the cliff tops are little packs of Gnolls, and they drop paws you need to collect. If you head straight north from the farm and kill your way along the cliff edges to the east, you will come to where the paddocks meet the waters edge… and Murlocs!

The Murlocs up this end are the lowest around and have a pretty good drop rate for the eyes you need in the Westfall Stew. While you are running around the zone, be sure to kill any Goretusks and Vultures for the other parts. Okra will drop from the mechanical golems later.

Once you have killed all your Defias, collected your Gnoll Paws and retrieved your pocket watch, make your way around handing in.

[14] The Peoples Militia
Obtained from : Gryan Stoutmantle, Sentinel Hill, Westfall
Objective : Slay 15 Defias Looters and 15 Pillagers
Rewards : 975 XP

The second step in the Defias killing follows onto Looters and Pillagers. There are two main places you can go - the Defias hangout Moonbrook, or the lesser known Gold Coast Quarry. Depending on the time of day, Moonbrook can sometimes be completely over run with other players.

Just like their relatives, these Defias will also drop the Red Leather Bandanas, and if you haven’t already collected your 15, you will after this quest.

[15] The Killing Fields
Obtained from : Farmer Saldean, Saldeans Farm, Westfall
Objective : Slaughter 20 Harvest Watchers
Rewards : 2 Stamina 2 Spirit Robe and 1050 XP

Hopefully by now you’re a level or two higher, and the Harvest Watchers are a little easier to take. These golems are all around the zone, with the lower level ones usually lurking in the hay piles, while the Watchers, the ones you need, roam the fields. I tend to bounce between Saldeans Farm, The Molsen Farm and Furlbrows Pumkpin Patch, all three have Watchers. If you fought at the Gold Coast Quarry for your Defias, there are also Watchers at Alexton Farmstead which is the area just near there.

The Golems will also drop the Okra you need for the Westfall Stew quest, which if you have been killing Goretusks and Vultures, you can hand in. The golems also drop Hops which you will want to hold onto (only 5) to hand in later on for a separate quest, and Flasks of Oil, which is for another quest again, so hold onto 5 of these too.

Note:
Harvest Watchers (and Golems) are mechanical creatures, and thus you can not drain any life from them (if you are level 14 or over). They are also immune to fear and taunt, which means your Voidwalker most likely won’t be able to tank these for you. For these fights I recommend the Imp to help take them down as quickly as I could. I was surprised to find you can use drain soul and in fact yield a shard!

By now you should start to be running a little dry on Westfall quests, the ones remaining involving mobs a little too high to take at our level. At level 14 you can pick up the first quest that will eventually send you inside The Deadmines, the first instance Alliance see. You can pick it up from Gryan Stoutmantle at Sentinel Hill Westfall and follow the quest log, or read through the information under the Deadmines guide.

It’s up to you if you complete it now or later, most pick up groups won’t take players before level 17 or more. If you do decide to run around handing in now, feel free to take a look at the Lakeshire guide for the starting quests in that zone. If you’re in the mood to run around, these can give you a nice boost to your XP. For now though, I’m going to leave the remaining high level Westfall quests and make my way over to Loch Modan!

Additional Quests
Below are two quests that come from outside the normal quest givers in Westfall. Humble Beginnings comes from Stormwind – more specifically the building to the right of the cathedral if you were facing it.

[15] Humble Beginnings
Obtained from : Baros Alexston, Cathedral Square, Stormwind City
Objective : Retrieve a simple compass
Rewards : 1050 XP

For the compass you need to head to Alexston Farmstead and into the burnt out hut there. The problem is the three defias pull right out the front, extremely difficult solo. Fear is your friend here along with any tricks you might have up your sleeve, potions, bombs etc.

[16] Sander's Hidden Treasure
Obtained from : Captain Sander's Treasure Map, Dropped Item
Objective : “A Treasure Hunt”
Rewards : 8 Slot Bag, Cloth Sash, Sander’s stained Shirt and XP!

Obtaining this quest relies on luck or a lot of patience. The first step drops from the Murlocs along the beach. It doesn’t appear to be level based as I had it drop from both the low level Murlocs while collecting my eyes, as well as the higher ones further south.

A fun quest, this sends you on a treasure hunt around the zone, stopping at different places to find more clues. The footlocker is the hardest of all the items to obtain as it’s half buried in the sand surrounded by level 15 or so Murlocs… some with pets! If you can complete this step however, the rest is simply running around.

I have also marked out the different spots on the map for you…

Note : Hold onto 5 x Flasks of Oil – you will need these for a quest later on.
