Crypt's Alliance leveling guide, Part 4!

Loch Modan

Started: Level 14
Completed: Level 16
Loch Modan is the Gnome/Dwarf replacement to Westfall, and as such the starting quests you will pick up will be green. In the past though, when I have tried to go from Westfall directly to Redridge Mountains, I tend to find myself struggling after doing the lower level quests. By including Loch Modan in the middle, I got myself an extra level or two which made the transition a little smoother. Plus you get to experience more of the game!

Getting there:
From Westfall you need to make your way back to Stormwind City and through to the Dwarven District. If you are having trouble finding it, locate a guard and request directions to “The Deeprun Tram”.

Once you arrive at Ironforge, you will enter via Tinker Town. As you exit the tram tunnel, follow it around to your left until you come to the gates of Ironforge. (Open your map if you need too, bottom left corner). If you are a Human, you won’t have the IF flight path, get that now! You will find it in the center of the zone. Once outside in Dun Morogh, all you need to do is follow the path. You will notice on the map below that the road forks off at the east end, it doesn’t matter which direction you take here. The top most route (the one I took) will lead you through North Gate Pass, the lower one is South Gate Pass. Both gates lead you into Loch Modan, just different ends.

If you take the North Gate Pass, you can do a quick quest on your way through…

[15] Find Bingles
Obtained from : Gnoarn, Tinker Town, Ironforge
Objective : Find Bingles
Rewards : 25 XP

As you exit the Tram in Ironforge, you will most likely see Gnoarn with a yellow exclamation mark directly in front of you. He wants to you find Bingles who is floating around Loch Modan, so grab this quest on your way through.

[10] The Lost Pilot
Obtained from : Pilot Hammerfoot, North Gate Pass, Dun Morogh
Objective : Find Pilot Hildelve
Rewards : 420 XP

Although this quest is green, it’s super easy… basically free XP. As you enter North Gate Pass you will see Pilot Hammerfoot. To find his lost comrade, head north-west to where you can see the path veers off slightly. Keep running west and eventually you will see a dark patch in the snow ahead, mousing over it reveals “a dwarven corpse”.

[11] A Pilot’s Revenge
Obtained from : A Dwarven Corpse, North Gate Pass, Dun Morogh
Objective : Kill Mangeclaw and return his Claw to Pilot Hammerfoot
Rewards : 650 XP

The corpse is at the base of a snowy slope, and if you now turn your direction upwards, you should be able to spot a big white bear patrolling back and forth. That’s Mangeclaw. At level 11 he is a very easy kill, his only real ability is “Revenge” which knocks you over and stuns for 2 seconds. Once you have obtained his claw, return to Hammerfoot to hand in before continuing north through to Loch Modan.

You will come into Loch Modan just above Algaz Station, head inside the building there to grab the quests.

[14] Stormpike’s Order
Obtained from : Mountaineer Stormpike, Algaz Station, Loch Modan
Objective : Delivery to Stormwind
Rewards : ??? XP

[15] Filthy Paws
Obtained from : Mountaineer Stormpike, Algaz Station, Loch Modan
Objective : Collect 4 loads of Miners Gear
Rewards : Mail or Cloth Chest Piece, or a Shield and 1350 XP

The delivery to Stormwind can wait until you return for the remaining Westfall quests. The Miners Gear comes from Silver Stream Mine, however we can complete another quest from there if we head down to Thelsamar first. Head out of the building and continue south along the main path until you enter Thelsamar. Don’t forget to grab your flight path…

Note: If you are a Gnome or Dwarf, you can collect your version of the “Swift Message”…

[11] Rat Catching
Obtained from : Mountaineer Kadrell, Thelsamar, Loch Modan
Objective : Collect 12 Rat Tunnel Ears
Rewards : Leather Bracers or Cloth Boots and 875 XP

As I mentioned, this zone is an alternative to Westafall and as such the beginning quests will be green. They still yield decent XP however, and at your level you will be able to romp through them. The Rats that drop the ears you need inhabit Silver Stream Mine among other places, here’s your “second bird”. Run around gathering other quests from Thelsamar, and once you’ve grabbed them all, continue south along the main path. There are yet more quests to obtain at the Valley of Kings.

[12] In Defense of the Kings Lands
Obtained from : Mountaineer Cobbleflint, Valley of Kings, Loch Modan
Objective : Kill 10 Stonsplinter Troggs and 10 Stonsplinter Scouts
Rewards : 900 XP

[12] The Trogg Threat
Obtained from : Captain Rugelfuss, Valley of Kings, Loch Modan
Objective : Collect 8 Trogg stone teeth
Rewards : 900 XP

Now that we have most of our quests, time to start the killing. Making your way back towards Thelsamar you should see a dirt path leading south-east off the main one, just up from the Valley of Kings. Follow that path into the large open area and you will see the Trolls that you need. The scouts will throw things at you from a distance, be careful when pulling. Both sorts will drop the teeth you need…

[15] In Defense of the Kings Lands
Obtained from : Mountaineer Gravelgaw, Valley of Kings, Loch Modan
Objective : Kill 10 Stonsplinter Skullthumpers and 10 Stonsplinter Seers
Rewards : 3 Lesser Healing Potions and 1050 XP

After handing in the first step, you can pick up the second stage from Mountaineer Gravelgaw, standing just out the front of the steps. To find the Skullthumpers and Seers, head back to where you killed the Troggs and Scouts,
only this time you want to find the path that leads higher up into the mountains. This is where you will find the troggs you need.

Once you have killed what you need, head back to Mountaineer Gravelgaw to hand in, and pick up the next stage from Mountaineer Wallbang just inside the building.

[11] Thelsamar Blood Sausage
Obtained from : Vidra Hearthstove, Stoutlagger Inn, Thelsamar
Objective : Collect the ingredients for Blood Sausage
Rewards : 5 x Blood Sausage, the Recipe and 875 XP

This quest requires you to collect different items from the animals throughout the zone. If you managed to have any Goretusk Intestines drop while in Westfall, you can hand them in with this quest! Heading out of the Trogg area, kill every Bear, Spider and Boar you can see from here up to the Silver Stream Mine, hopefully that should yield you all the ingredients.

Once you’re at Silver Stream Mine, you will need to fight through the rats (that drop ears) into the actual mine part. Inside you are looking for stacks of boxes, if you mouse over these you will see the looting cog appear, they are your loads of Miners Gear for the Filthy Paws quest. Once you have collected your four, continue killing the rats until you have your ears, and then make your way back to Algaz Station, Thelsamar and Valley of Kings to hand in. (Basically reverse the trip up…)

Note: If the zone is highly populated and you are having troubling obtaining your rat ears, there are little pockets of rats along the zone walls and around the outside of the Mine.

[18] Ironband Excavation
Obtained from : Jern Hornhelm, Thelsamar
Objective : Speak with Explorer Fellhew
Rewards : 340 XP

[15] Excavation Progress Report
Obtained from : Prospector Ironband, Ironband Excavation Site, Loch Modan
Objective : Bring Ironband's Progress Report to Jern Hornhelm in Thelsamar.
Rewards : 270 XP

From the Valley of Kings, make your way around to Ironband’s Excavation Site. The easiest route is back along the main path to Thelsamar and then just follow the waters edge until you can see the site’s structure in the distance.
You will find Magmar Fellhew at the tents just outside.

If you’re up for a bit of a run, there is the not so known about Farstrider Lodge, nestled high above the excavation site. You need to run all the way around the back of the dig site, and around to where you can find the entrance into the lodge. It really is tucked right out of the way. Inside you can pick up the following two quests;

[15] Crocolisk Hunting
Obtained from : Marek Ironheart, The Fartstrider Lodge, Loch Modan
Objective : Collect 5 pieces of Crocolisk Meat and 6 Crocolisk Skins
Rewards : Recipe, Cape and 1050 XP

[16] A Hunter's Boast
Obtained from : Daryl the Youngling, The Fartstrider Lodge, Loch Modan
Objective : Kill 6 Mountain Buzzards and return to Daryl the within 15 minutes.
Rewards : Bow or Gun and 875 XP

When you pick up this second quest, a timer will appear on your screen. Thankfully the Mountain Buzzards are just outside the lodge, although if you’re like me, you probably killed a few on the way in. Fifteen minutes is plenty of time to kill your 6, the respawn timer is relatively quick and if you head around to your left when leaving the lodge, you can find an area with 5 – 6 Buzzards just waiting to be killed! Also because not many people know about this quest, you most likely won’t have any competition.

[17] A Hunter's Challenge
Obtained from : Daryl the Youngling, The Fartstrider Lodge, Loch Modan
Objective : Kill 5 Mountain Boars and return to Daryl the within 12 minutes.
Rewards : Shirt, Sword and 950 XP

Like the first quest, you are once again on a time limit. The Boars are a little further out than the Buzzards, as well as being a little higher level. I had little trouble doing this step and made it back with over 5 minutes to spare, but if you don’t feel comfortable taking on level 17’s (depending your current level), you can always come back.

Note : For both of these quests, the timers do not stop once you get your final kill, you must also return and complete the quest in under the allotted time. After you have completed the two quests dor Daryl, Vyrin Swiftwind has an elite quest to kill Sooty the Bear if you have a group…

Once you have done those, head back to the waters edge. If you run anti-clockwise around the lake, or just head south from the excavation site, you will eventually come across a crashed plane and Bingles. Hurray you found him!

[15] In Defense of the Kings Lands
Obtained from : Mountaineer Wallbang, Valley of Kings, Loch Modan
Objective : Kill 10 Stonsplinter Shaman and 10 Stonsplinter Bonesnappers
Rewards : 1050 XP

[18] Bingles' Missing Supplies
Obtained from : Bingles Blastenheimer, Loch Modan
Objective : Find and return Bingles' supplies
Rewards : Leather Gloves and 1050 XP

From Bingles, make your way to the first large island, it’s crawling with crocolisks! Kill your way around this island till it’s either void of crocs or you have all your quest pieces. From there make your way to the island just above it. This one is filled with Stonsplinter Shaman and Bonesnappers.

You can see on the map that the island has two “huts” of sorts. The one closest to the waters edge has Bingles' Blastencapper. The hammer is inside a tool bucket just in front of the crashed carts in the middle of the island (51,24), while the screwdriver is at the north end of the island in the middle of the camp (48,20).

To get the last piece, the wrench, you need to jump over to the smaller island to the west. This is one of the harder pulls as they seem to all come at once, but if you’re careful and prepared to run into the water a couple of times, you can kill them. Once you have all of Bingle’s lost tools, collect any remaining crocolisk pieces before returning to Bingles and the The Fartstrider Lodge to hand in.

Before you leave the islands, make sure you have your kill count, sometimes by the time you have collected the tools you don’t as there are also lower level troggs here.

When running back to hand in “In Defense of the Kings Lands”, I stopped off in Thelsamar to hand into Jern. The next step requires you to head back to Ironforge, but before you do that, run down to Valley of Kings and hand in. Once I was done, I made my way back to Ironforge to hand in “Report to Ironforge” which you give to Prospector Stormpike in the Hall of Explorers.

Having only this quest and one other remaining in Loch Modan, I decided not to return. If you want to do the following steps for this quest line, you return to Loch Modan and speak to Jern Hornhelm in Thelsamar. You then speak to Huldar whom you may have seen while running around. After that you escort Miran to the Ironband Excavation Site.

Quests I didn’t complete…

[15] Excavation Progress Report
Obtained from : Prospector Ironband, Ironband Excavation Site, Loch Modan
Objective : Bring Ironband's Progress Report to Jern Hornhelm in Thelsamar.
Rewards : 270 XP

When you hand in this step Gaptain Rugelfuss upstairs has the final step, to kill the Trogg leader, Grawmug, and his two guards. These three reside in the cave in Stonesplinter Valley, the area you were killing to get the Seers and Skullthumpers. At this level, you will need a group or at the very least a partner for this as you have to clear through a cave, and these three all come at once.

[18] Gathering Idols
Obtained from : Magmar Fellhew, Ironband Excavation Site, Loch Modan
Objective : Collect 8 Carved Stone Idols
Rewards : ??? XP

The Carved Stone Idols drop from the Troggs that are in an amongst the ruins at the Ironband Excavation Site. They range from level 18 through to 20, but are doable from around level 16 or so. Since I had already flown back to Ironforge, I didn’t bother going back for just this quest. It’s up to you if you want to.
